A Hungarian Kft. trading cross-border within the European Union often needs a Hungarian VAT ID number—in Hungarian, közösségi adószám. It identifies businesses for certain intra-Community transactions.
The Hungarian tax number and the EU VAT identification number must be distinguished. For German-speaking entrepreneurs, the process is not completed by one simple application: forms, authority communication and tax terminology are in Hungarian, the correct registration depends on the actual business, and many steps run electronically through Hungarian access or authorised representatives.
HUNCONSULT supports this process as a German-speaking service provider and reliable partner. Norbert Péter translates not only language but also procedures: he coordinates the information with accounting and specialist partners so that registration and the first invoice fit together.
The Hungarian tax number and EU VAT ID are not the same
A Kft. registered in Hungary receives a Hungarian tax number (adószám) during its tax registration. According to current information from the Hungarian tax authority NAV, this number also serves as the national VAT identification; no additional general VAT registration is required for that purpose.
For certain transactions with businesses in other EU Member States, the Community tax number is additionally required. It generally consists of the country code HU and the relevant part of the Hungarian tax number. Whether and from when it is needed depends on the planned transactions.
When does a Kft. need a Community tax number?
Typical situations can include:
- intra-Community supplies of goods,
- intra-Community acquisitions,
- certain cross-border B2B services,
- transactions using the reverse-charge procedure,
- certain EU statements and recapitulative statements.
Not every invoice to a foreign customer is automatically issued without VAT. The type of service, place of supply, customer’s business status and valid VAT ID must fit together. The Hungarian accountant or responsible tax specialist determines the specific VAT treatment.

The process for a newly formed Hungarian Kft.
For a new Kft., tax information is submitted in connection with company registration. A registered company reports additional data and later changes to NAV through the current electronic procedures; form T201T is provided for this purpose.
This is where the language barrier matters: the decisive fields and explanations follow Hungarian tax law. A literal translation is not enough if it is still unclear whether the transaction is a supply of goods, service, intra-Community acquisition or another transaction. HUNCONSULT records the project and ensures that the responsible Hungarian specialist works with the right information.
A sensible process consists of:
- recording the planned goods and services,
- identifying customer and supplier countries,
- checking the national tax number and required VAT status,
- setting up the Community tax number before the first relevant EU transaction,
- coordinating invoice templates and accounting processes,
- checking the number in the EU VIES system after activation.
HUNCONSULT coordinates these steps with the Hungarian accountant. The entrepreneur therefore does not have to work through Hungarian forms, authority terms and responsibilities alone. The result is not merely an application for a number, but clarity about how it will be used in the actual business.
Foreign company without a Hungarian Kft.
A German or other foreign company can also become liable to register for VAT in Hungary without a Hungarian subsidiary. Whether this is required depends on the specific supplies, services, movement of goods and possible simplification rules.
For foreign legal entities that do not have to be entered in the Hungarian company register, NAV currently identifies form T201 for applying for a Hungarian tax or Community tax number. Typical documents include:
- current register or formation evidence,
- evidence of signature and representation,
- a certificate of residence from the responsible tax authority,
- certified Hungarian translations where required,
- a description of the planned taxable activity in Hungary,
- a power of attorney if a representative handles the process.
EU companies and companies from third countries can be subject to different representation rules. The appropriate procedure is therefore checked before submission.
Which information should be clear in advance?
The application is easier to prepare when the economic transactions are described specifically:
- Which goods or services are offered?
- Where are customers and suppliers located?
- Will goods be moved into or out of Hungary?
- Where does transport begin and end?
- Are the business partners taxable businesses?
- Which VAT IDs do the parties use?
- Are there warehouses, platforms or fixed establishments in other countries?
- When will the first relevant transaction take place?
This information is more important than the general phrase “EU business”. It allows accounting, registration and invoicing to be aligned correctly.
How long does activation take?
A fixed processing time cannot be promised responsibly. For a newly formed Kft., the process depends, among other things, on complete registration, the reported data and possible questions from NAV. A foreign company may also require review, translations and representation. Questions are usually handled in Hungarian and within set deadlines—another reason not to run the process without an accessible contact.
Instead of guaranteeing “5 to 15 working days”, HUNCONSULT plans the first EU transaction with a realistic time buffer. Complete and consistent information helps reduce avoidable questions.
VIES check: important, but not the whole VAT assessment
The European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, VIES, can be used to check whether a VAT ID is confirmed as valid for cross-border EU transactions. The query should be documented, for example with a saved record showing the date.
A positive VIES confirmation does not automatically prove that every specific service is exempt or should be invoiced under reverse charge. It confirms the number; the place of supply and further requirements must also be assessed.
Prepare invoices only after the specialist assessment
Before invoicing begins, at least these points are coordinated:
- complete company details and Hungarian tax number,
- Community tax number where required for the transaction,
- customer’s VAT ID and business status,
- date and description of the service,
- applicable rate or reverse-charge notice,
- Hungarian online invoicing and reporting obligations where applicable,
- document and data transfer to accounting.
An invoice can be corrected, but this creates additional work. An agreed template therefore provides a much better start.
What often causes questions—and how to prepare
Questions often arise not because of the country, but because information is incomplete or inconsistent. Typical points include unclear activity descriptions, differing company addresses, missing translations or a planned transaction that does not fit the stated activity.
The answer is not artificially inflated documentation. Current documents and a short, comprehensible description of the real business model are decisive.

How HUNCONSULT supports the registration
HUNCONSULT does not provide tax advice and does not independently decide the VAT treatment. As a service provider, HUNCONSULT records the planned business, clarifies the required information and involves a suitable Hungarian accountant or tax specialist.
Norbert Péter coordinates the participants and remains the fixed German-speaking contact. For the client, HUNCONSULT therefore feels less like an anonymous referral service and more like an experienced partner at their side. Company formation, NAV registration, bank, invoice templates and ongoing accounting are treated as one connected business start.
Frequently asked questions about the Hungarian VAT ID
Does every Kft. automatically receive an EU VAT ID?
The Kft. receives a Hungarian tax number during registration. Whether a Community tax number is needed and activated depends on the planned EU transactions and the reported tax information.
Is the Hungarian tax number the same as the Community tax number?
No. The national tax number serves Hungarian tax registration. The Community tax number with the HU prefix is used for certain cross-border EU situations.
Can I always invoice without VAT with a valid VAT ID?
No. The type of transaction, place of supply, customer status and special requirements of the transaction must also be correct.
How can I check a Hungarian VAT ID?
For EU business, validity can be checked in the European Commission’s VIES system. The confirmation should be kept with the transaction documentation.
Which form applies to foreign companies?
For a foreign legal entity without Hungarian company-register obligations, NAV currently identifies form T201. For a registered Hungarian company, additional data and changes are generally reported through T201T. The current form version is checked before submission.
Conclusion: prepare the number and business process together
A Hungarian VAT ID is not an isolated administrative step. It must fit the actual movement of goods or services and the invoicing process. Clarifying transactions, countries and customer status in advance creates a reliable basis for EU business.
HUNCONSULT coordinates the practical preparation; the responsible independent partner tax adviser examines individual VAT questions. Registration, invoice and accounting therefore work together instead of standing separately.
